Marriage
seminars have been around for a
while. The most well known is
"Marriage Encounter"
which was originally oriented for
those of the Catholic faith. Now it
has spread to all different
denominations, with groups all over
the world. The principles of these
marriage seminars are simple: Teach
couples how to improve their
communication, and keep their
perspective focused on sacred
marriage promises as expounded by
their own Christian faith.
"Therapeutic
marriage seminars involve more
in-depth personal discussion and
experiencing, while marriage
enrichment seminars provide a
lighter, more educational and
motivational approach." (Dr.
Ken Robertson)
In
addition to marriage seminars that
are religiously based, there have
been a few that have sprung up in
the past 20 years that are more
secular in nature. These tend to be
run more by marriage counseling or
therapy professionals, and usually
are more intensive. The
principles of these marriage
seminars are to help couples
examine their own interpersonal
styles and improve their
communication. Usually they
include having couples take a test
of some sort to either assist the
presenter in the presentation or
provide feedback to the couples
regarding current
"strengths" or
"weaknesses" that exist
in their relationship.
While
religiously based marriage seminars
tend to be one time experiences
(although several "marriage
encounter-type" groups have
follow-up seminars available),
secular marriage seminars often
include several weekend events,
where different topics are
explored. It has become
common among professionals to
classify seminars as having either
a "therapeutic" or an
"enrichment" focus.
Therapeutic marriage seminars
involve more in-depth personal
discussion and experiencing, while
marriage enrichment seminars
provide a lighter, more educational
and motivational approach.
"Magnify
Your Marriage" Seminars
LDS
Magnify Your Marriage seminars and
retreats are based on the
assumption that most couples are
"ready" for a lighter
educational LDS marriage enrichment
approach, rather than something
more personal (although often one
spouse in a couple may be desirous
of something more). Dr. Ken
Robertson has found that this less
intrusive approach can help most
couples (together) make great
strides. In addition, it can
prepare the relationship for more
in-depth approaches in the future,
should they be needed.
Saturday-only seminars are not often available, due to higher interest in the pampering get-away overnight retreats at quality hotels. However, most of our retreat locations have the option of only attending the Friday night and Saturday day presentations at a retreat without the overnight stay for approximately $100 less. Also, if ordered at least a month in advance, we often have 2 payment plans available for our full overnight retreat packages.
